I roughed out this box a couple weeks ago, wrapped the outside and let it sit to dry. After finishing another project today, I decided to finish turn this box. After unwrapping it I realized I should have let it sit another week or two, but patience not being my strong poing, I decided to finish it up anyway.

I textured the top with my burner and then applied black gesso. I finished it with a coat of danish oil, followed by a couple coats of antique oil. I'll buff it out in a day or two. Some cool looking grain on this one.

Very Nice! I like the contrast of the texture effect against the oak.

Kathy,
great looking box, fit and finish is perfect. as far as the texturing ,which is really nice, explain the burner that you refer to. I have been experimenting with various texturing patterns and like the finish you put on he box.

Very nice piece. The texturing and black gesso add a lot to the piece.

Really classy box for sure. Isn't silky oak one of the bad boys for dust or that a similar species.

Greg, I have a Razor woodburner and for this piece I used the ball point tip to burn the dimples in. After burning the dimples, I went over that area lightly with some 800 grit to get rid of any bits of char, then painted on the black gesso with a foam brush (with the lathe spinning at 100 rpms).

It is one of the bad boys for some people, but so far I haven't had a reaction to any woods.

Beautiful work Kathy, I love the texture and the black, it goes well with the finish of the silky oak. Really clean tenon, and nice tight joint in the lid. Can't ask for much better than that... Oh, and impeccably straight sides! :)

Nice box. If you asked me to identify the wood, I would have guessed sycamore/plane tree.
