Last October I rand into some good luck by meeting up with a fellow who had a LARGE BLM on the ground and cut into pieces in his yard. I roughed out a number of bowls and found some beautiful color and character in much of the wood. This first photo is one is one of a 17"+ bowl blank being roughed out. I took it to the 10% wall thickness to diameter ratio and set it in the basement with little more than suing a watchful eye. Then 2 months ago I ran it up to Dale Larsen (AAW President) for a look to see how it was drying/curing. We read 12% moisture. Dale suggested that I could do a final turning and sand then set aside for a couple of months inside, however I was going to see some minor warping and the existing cracks in the knot-holes expand some.

All this was true and finally I filled the knot-hole cracks with epoxy and did final sand to 600# then applied two coats of General's Salad Bowl Finish and sanded after each coat. Then a coat of Bees Oil (Bees wax and Mineral Oil). I am very happy with the results. This 17" x 6" bowl was given last night as a gift to some special friends.

You can tell it's going to be a nice piece just looking at the rough.

Yes, good job. My lathe only has a 12 inch swing. I want a full size lathe in the worst way.
