LOL That, my friend, is Box Elder. Have been looking for some of that ever since I started turning.

It is beautiful, what size is it?

That particular piece is about 11x5x5. Unfortunately the log had some bad heart rot (mush) so I lost a lot of the most intense flame. Had to cut out what ever sized pieces I could salvage. Actually, I didn't just "find" it by the road...a friend was getting rid of his wood pile and told me to come help myself. :)

Great score, Carole!!! I've always wanted some big chunks of that myself and have had a number of people tell me, "Why heck, we just took one down." or "Yeah, my dad is taking one down next month." Always get promised a few chunks, but alas, I think they end up as firewood! (And NOT by MY doing!:) ) Can't wait to see some results off of that one! Beautiful.

I will probably wait a while to turn this stuff until I feel my skills can do it justice! Got to get the hollowing with that Hollowmaster down first! LOL

That's the kind of wood that would make me really ponder what shape to go for. Great find Carole.

Ernie, I will probably be pondering for a long time! My initial thought on this particular piece was a couple of graceful lidded boxes, but I have yet to make a box and I certainly am not going to use this for practice!

Just remember to show us the pics when you get it turned.
Looks like some super stuff and you just got to love the price.

Carole,

While I am dreaming, could you bring some of the scrap that you cut off, on Saturday? I have never seen that wood in person and would like to.

OK, no doorprize but it would be neat to see it in person:)

Sometimes we just luck up don't we. It seems like it wasn't to long ago you were trying to find wood, and now you are finding beautiful stuff like this, congratulations. Looking forward to some great pictures from this. I wish we had box elder down here.
