I like to try and keep my metal planes in good shape - clean and free from oxidation. Once in a while one of them gets discolored from a fingerprint that wasn't wiped off in a reasonable time. It turns out my wife had the perfect fix - a fingernail buffing block. It's a small (about 3 x 1 1/2 x 1) block of fairly dense foam with the four larger faces covered with four grits of emory (or similar). They make a great little fingerprint eraser. A few wipes with one of the finer grits and the fingerprint is gone!

It is the patina on most of my planes that keeps the finger smudges from causing any problems. That and a quick wipe with a paste wax covered rag.
