No, it's not that bad. I just took one of my ZCI blanks and set it up for a 45 cut on the table saw. No problem cutting the slot for the blade. Got my 3/16" router bit out to do the slot for the riving knife.....Uh Oh. How do I cut a 45 degree angle for the RK? Only thing I can think of is to build some sort of jig to hold the insert at 45 degrees to use against the fence on the router table....And hope that the bit will reach it to make the necessary cut.

Anyone have a better idea? Thanks! Jim.

I'd just drill it out and maybe clean it up with a file or rasp.
I don't believe you need to keep the RK nice and tight to the insert since once the work has gotten to that point, all the cutting is over - so "close enough" is good enough in this case.

Agree - "close enough" is fine at that point.

Yes, it just needs to be close enough. That's why I used a 3/16" bit for the straight cut one. It is wider than the blade and RK, but no issues.
Good idea on the jigsaw set at 45. That should work. I wouldn't want to use the BS as I want to keep the outside ring intact, and with the Grizzly G0691, I can do that with the RK.258033 I have seen some ZCIs for other saws that were cut out at the back side.

Jim,

If your kerf is narrower than your rk, you're setting yourself up for problems. The thickness of the rk should be *between* the thicknesses of the saw plate and the kerf, so the rk holds the wood away from the plate but so the rk fits the kerf.

If the wood is going to close in on something, you want it to be the rk and not the saw plate.

They make think rk's, at least for my Uni.. probably your saw too!! :-)

Jim, sorry, this may not have been clear. That was in reference Mike saying to use a hand saw to finish the cut for the RK to come through the ZCI. The hand saw is a narrower kerf than the TS blade. If I just used the hand saw, then the RK would not fit through the opening. Is that clearer? Not sure how else to explain it if not. Maybe I should have said the kerf would be narrower using the hand saw. Jim.
