After taking a break my wireless mouse did not work when I turned it back on. After fiddling with the switch for a few moments I took the batteries out in anticipation of replacing them and they were almost too hot to touch. What happened?

check the internet for a recall , some batteries are known to cause fires

They are standard Rayovac AAA batteries. No signs of leakage or corrosion. Can't find anything about a recall.

Most batteries with recalls are rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. I don't ever remember seeing a recall of standard AA/AAA/C/D batteries, but I certainly could have missed one.
