Self-adhesive sandpaper ??

I often see references to self-adhesive sandpaper in a woodworking or sharpening context. None of my searches in WW catalogs, hardware stores, home centers, etc. have turned up any. So where does one find this stuff?

I only buy the rolls in self adhesive. If you are looking for fine sandpaper to sharpen with, I'd recommend going to an auto parts store and getting the fine stuff in sheets. You can then use adhesive spray to stick it to a plate of glass. I don't think the really fine 1000, 2000, etc comes in a roll, or at least I have not seen it in a roll.

The rougher stuff on the roll (150, 220) works well enough when stuck to a flat surface for setting the bevel of a chisel or flattening a plane sole though.

Some time ago, I picked up sanding boards typically used for autobody work, it's amazing what a long sanding block can do on a flat surface, can also set the boards up to flex to follow contours.

Just my opinion, but for sharpening (up to 400 grit), the best is the 3M Gold 2-3/4" wide PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) rolls. A-weight paper reduces the chance of dubbing the edges and the adhesive comes off cleanly. Lie-Nielsen sells them, but you can get them much cheaper on Amazon or Ebay. For general sanding, I like the Norton 3X sheets. Tools for Working Wood usually has the best price, but I just bought a bunch from Peachtree at the Woodworking Show really cheaply.

It's usually listed as "PSA" sandpaper (pressure sensitive adhesive)

Redo your search using "PSA sandpaper" You will get more hits than you'll know what to do with.

I bought a roll of 180 and a roll of 400 automotive PSA from my local NAPA dealer. Great stuff. Use it for sanding on a block, hand sanding and on a scary sharp system using a granite block (along with some 600 and finer wet or dry with 3M #77 spray adhesive applied to the back). Way better than 3M "production" paper.
