Communion chalice will be used for several hours per month. I sealed the pores with dewaxed shellac. Over that I want to use wipe on poly. Should I use poly and thinner or poly, thinner, and oil?

CA? Just pour it in and run it around like wine! P.

I would use the wipe on poly without thinner and oil. My reasoning would be that since the chalice is already sealed with shellac the oil won't give the piece any more character but may retard the drying time of the poly depending on what type of oil you use. As for thinner, I don't believe you need it in this instance since the difference between wipe on and regular poly is that wipe on is thinned for application already. Thinning it further would necessitate quite a few coats to achieve a finish build.

Thank you Willie. I mixed up some Poly with thinner this morning, making my own WOP. No oil. I applied a coat on about 20 chalices and mugs. They look good and I will add more coats as needed. No photos until I get the computer back from the "regional" repair place in Arkansas.
