Wife just had a phone call telling her she downloaded some malware. She said it was a woman that could hardly speak english and had a heavy accent My wife said she was on a mac and the woman hung up on her

That scam has been around for a long time. I've received that type of call several times in the last two years. The last few times I told them that the scam was getting a long grey beard and they needed to come up with a new story.
