I would like to use some gold powder in a final coat of black pigmented finish, such as Urushi finishes of Japan.I think real gold is out of the question.Anyone know a good substitute for real gold powder ? Thanks Rob

I do maki-e work with urushi and kashu urushu. Usually,
I use real gold powder because a little goes a long way and is cheaper than you would think.
If you are not fussy about the finish, then powdered mica makes an interesting substitute for real gold.
Many different colors and textures of mica are available.

Blessings.

Have you considered crushing up a piece of gold leaf from the hobby store? It crushes quickly into a fine powder.
