I created both of these yesterday in between working on a flatwork project, seems that when doing flatwork little progress is seen even after a few hours time working on a piece whereas with the lathe a piece can be very quickly turned-out.
Both turned from Maple burl, on the one the walls are a bit thicker apx.1/4" at the top shoulder area so that I could retain the rougher outer part of the burl with the spikes still intact, so far one coat of wipe on poly applied, I'll do one more yet then give them a light sanding and buff. Entry holes are small ... less than 1/2" on both.

John
P.S. I really enjoy making these, less than 2 hrs to create them and done with small scraps of burl.

John,

Those are excellent. What tool do you use to hollow these small pieces out?

Both very nice. I especially like the taller one-great use of the semi-void.

Nicely done John, I really like the burl points in the first piece. Nice form on all of them.

I really like the burl point one also!!!! All the grain is awesome. Shows what you can do with small peices of figured wood.

Without the can you couldn't tell the size--sign of a good job!
