View Full Version : Clamps with spring loaded jaws?

It's amusing and frustrating how one can "securely" clamp down something to pound or drill on it and have the clamp get vibrated loose by the activity. The behavior of C-clamps is the worse in this respect. Metal clamps of the bar type are only slightly better. The plastic jawed bar clamps are even better, but still not good. My theory is that a clamp must have some springy-ness in its grip to avoid being shaken off. Is there a type of clamp that has a spring loaded jaw?

When I have to clamp something with a vibration issue, I use a cam clamp like the Bessey Kliklamp:

Or any of the one-handed squeeze clamps like these:

I often get Mr. Irwin to help me in my work. He's a good man, but he tends to loose his grip if the workpiece vibrates. I haven't worked with Mr. Bessey.

Try them. They will NOT let go under vibration (there is a ratchet mechanism that must be released before they will loosen).

How do old-fashioned handscrew clamps perform for this? I just discovered them and finding more and more uses for them.

Isn't this why woodworking vices exist?
