View Full Version : An Off Center Beaded Bowl....

This is a piece of ambrosia maple. Pretty rare here in Arizona. It's about 11 inches in dia. and 2.5 inches tall.

My off-center chuck was pretty simple. First, an oversize glue block using a screw center. (Glaser) Shape the outside, then do the beads. After sanding, move the screw chuck to a new hole just under an inch from the original. Then hollow the bowl and sand. Apply a finish, Daly's tung oil, and that's it.....

C&C welcome....

Wow!
That's incredible. I plan to make a nearly-identical-but-much-more-sloppily-executed version of that next time I'm on the lathe :)

It's a great looking bowl. It looks like a bunch of bowls all nested together at the first glance. I bet you get a lot of people picking it up to look at it.

Outstanding. This caught my fancy and gave me an idea about incorporating fusion glass into a project.Thanks.:)

This one is artistically done. I usually don't care too much for off center turnings, but this one is beautiful and not gimmicky. By the way, how big (how heavy) is the lathe you made this on?

That is quite a feat. Just to keep the tool engaged when turning those beads. Again you show us your mastery of the lathe. Great job and thanks for sharing.

My lathe is a Oneway...about 700 lb......However, I did one last summer on a Delta Midi..about 150 lb. The bowl was about 10 inches. I had to do the off center turning at a pretty slow speed. Other than that, no problem.

I've made many of these, and folks are sure drawn to them, at shows. very pretty wood on this & the beads look very well done.

Love this, Wally. How did you reverse it to finish the bottom? Looks like maybe double-faced tape on a large faceplate might hold it, but other that, I'm scratching my head.

Man Wally that looks really nice, I just bought a beading tool I'm going to have to try your method, I like the simplicity of it and the results speak for themselves.

Thanks David....I used a set of cole jaws...vacuum won't work with beads.

The beads add a lot to the piece and the offcenter looks clean cut. A donut chuck could also be used to hold the bowl to turn the bottom if you did not have cole jaws large enough.

Very nice Wally. I don't remember seeing one of a similar style before. I will have to try and remember it. Not easy for me to do!

Ah, yes. Thanks, Wally! A good excuse to buy (or make) another tool I thought I couldn't really justify! Thomas's suggestion of a donut chuck is also good.
