A recent email from Fine Woodworking mentioned that Baileigh Industrial is expanding from metalworking into woodworking equipment. I checked out their website and see that they have 3 different lathes. The company is based in Wisconsin, but it looks like their equipment is manufactured in Taiwan. If their big lathe (18 x 40) is a knockoff of any other brand, I don't recognize it.

I don't know anything about Baileigh other than what is stated above, so please don't take this as an endorsement or a critique. Just thought people might be interested. Here is a link (http://wood.baileighindustrial.com/heavy-duty-wood-lathe-wl-1840vs)to the large lathe.

LOOKS cool. A bit lighter than the 3520B (both weight and price). Will be anxious to hear the first hand reviews.

The 1847 looks similar to the Grizzly G0733 - which is a good thing in my book.

Good to make your acquaintance, Shane.

You know Shane, the thought occurred to me that you you could send one of your lathes, perhaps a WL-1847VS to some beginner turner to get a good review about how the lathe helps one to improve one's turning.

Coincidentally, I am available :D.

Think of it as "cheap" advertising.

Interesting looking lathe and, for a 2HP, the price is REALLY good. Too bad I already have the Green Monster!

Little did I know Baileigh's head offices are 20 miles from me in Manitowoc WI...I wonder if they have any demo lathes on display to see.

The headstock in the lathe in the link above looks like it is bolted to the ways, and with the motor mounted below the headstock, I don't think that one slides. My first thought on seeing it was, boy, that is a narrow footprint. Is this one intended to be bolted to the floor?

Is there an extension available for the bench-top lathe ? Do you mean the make the lathe longer?

Paul Saffold

Yes, many other brands have extensions to lengthen the capacity between centers.

We do not offer them right now, but will here real soon. Stay tuned, our woodworking line of machinery is just getting warmed up.
