Incra I-Box set up question

I just purchased the Incra I-box jig and had a question on set up. I've watched the DVD and read the instructions but I am not sure on how wide the stock needs to be to space the pins evenly. The formula on the chart is Stock Width =(total pins + 1/2) x Kerf NOTE: Total pins must be odd number. Just wondering if someone can give me an example say using a 5" wide piece of stock with say a 1/4" kerf? I hate to sound ignorant but my light bulb just isn't turning on. Maybe it's the shift work I do. Would I need to stick to 4 7/8" wide stock instead of 5" to make the pins even?
