This is a little cherry box that I've been working on for about a week. I turned the box and then started doing the piercing and burning a little bit at a time, in between other projects. I found that if I tried to pierce for too long, my hand got tired and I got a little sloppy, so just did it in little sections.
The piering may have taken the longest, but the toughest part was turning the tenon off the bottom. The walls are very thin and with the piercing, they are pretty fragile.

It's about 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and finished with antique oil.

Kathy that is beautiful, what do you pierce with?

Thanks Tim,

I use the Foredom rotary tool. One of these days I'll get an NSK Presto (much better for finer detail work), but the Foredom works fine for now, plus I can carve with it.

I love it, the contrast of the light piercings and the dark lid is great.

very nice, Kathy, i wonder if after turning you could reduce the tendon to spigot jaws size and after piercing just sand that tendon off using a jacobs chuck to hold a sandpaper, just a thought, it does look fragile.....well done

Elegant. What a enjoyable thing that would be to use every day, jewelry etc. Is that band shagreen ?

Really nice, you took an ordinary piece of wood and made it into an exceptional piece that anyone would want to have, the extra time it took was well worth it.

Nice one, Kathy. Is the rim dyed and pyro'd? Did you carve the little dimples in the top rim or did they develop as you did the pyro?

Great job on the piercing, too.

Very nice Kathy. I still have to do the piercing, I just got a power carver so I will be trying it soon. I would remove the tenon before I did the piercing. If you need to hold it on the lathe, use padded jaws or if you have a nova chuck, their soft jaws.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!
I've got some new burrs on order so hopefully I can get a little more delicate next time.

Mel and Eric, the band was textured with my ball tip pyro pen and then I went over the band with a coat of black gesso to even out any areas that weren't burned as dark.
