What part of California? It's a big state.

If you're near San Francisco, look up The Japan Woodworker in Alameda:

(my sister bought me a saw from there for my birthday, and I envy my brother-in-law's regular visits)

I don't think the JWW retail store is there now. The owner sold to Woodcraft and the catalogs now say Parkersburg, West Virginia.

The Japan Woodworker retail store in Alameda is indeed gone :(

If you're in the East Bay and looking for Japanese hand tools, Hida Tool is worth seeing http://www.hidatool.com

Not tools, but you can visit the Sam Maloof historic residence and studio (museum) in Alta Loma, which is in Southern California. Look at "Malooffoundation.org" for more info.

Two US based chains that cater to woodworkers are Rockler and Woodcraft (I don't think they have stores in the UK??). There are locations for both in Northern and Southern California. Google them for locations. You will likely be able to visit both without going too far off route from your planned travel in California.
