Phew! This is the last of the dining chairs I have to make for my dining table. It has taken me years to turn the table undercarriage, and then all the chairs. I am glad I am done. Many days, I wondered if I would get the whole project done.
Multiple woods, and paint. I think I can now go sit down and relax!

Congrats on quite an achievement! If they all look as good as that one then you've definitely earned some down time. Go enjoy!

terrific, Charlie. Ask your library for the others I suggested. Everyone does it differently, and great ideas in each one.

Very nice. I have built several Windsor chairs and appreciate the time commitment it takes to complete one.

Michelle that is a beautiful chair, I always admire a chair like that and the work that it takes to make one. Honestly they look kind of frail.

Hi Fred..all wood is rived, thus making the chair much stronger than they might appear. the old bodgers knew their stuff!

They are both durable and comfortable. Also very light weight. I use one of mine as my shop chair.

Michelle, what does "all wood is rived" mean? I have heard the term and heard of riving knives but just what it is I don't know. They are beautiful and I can understand how much work there is in making one. I'm not knocking your work, just curious.:)

Fred: rived means logs are split down the grain lines. If one saws, then grain runs out the pieces, with no concern for strength. i.e. the little thin back spindles are very strong and have some flex.

Very impressive! It's both beautiful and practical and shows that you have a lot of talent and tenacity. Also, I'm impressed by the fact that you post at 4:56 A.M.

Michelle, have you seen the videos on Windsor chair making on Curtis Buchanan's web site? Interesting and informative stuff, and a lot of effort on his part to put them together. I followed his finishing schedule for milk paint for a chair and a table I made last year. Turned out nice.

Charlie: you might find the video: Making a Chair from a Tree by John Alexander. GREAT video. If you can find the book, you will be lucky. It might be out of print. the video shows you from tree to chair, and how to split & spokeshave everything

Plan on spending some time. There are 51 videos. :) Starts with a visit to his wood guy to get some logs, and finishes with putting some wax on the completed chair. Fascinating material, at least to me.

amazon and half.com both have used and new books of that title, only thing even the used books are more than i want to put out at this time. i might try the library, if they do not have it they can order it from another library

how to split & spokeshave everything i have 2 spokeshaves but only have used them to take bark off a blank, i thought you would turn most items???? i normally use a maul and splitters to seperate wood with the grain, chainsaw crossgrain, i use the band saw only for small stuff

WOW, Michelle, that's beautiful! You deserve a break! How many hours - from riving for a single chair to finished painting - any guess? I'm sure it felt like a ka-zillion!
