Hi Y'all, seems we have a lot of newbies in the last couple years, here's a big welcome to those I haven't met. I enjoy experimenting with different materials, and I have found that Basswood works well for engraving. Sometimes I use a toning lacquer for color/shading and engrave the inverted image. Many colors available, spray paint can also be used, and it provides a nice contrast engraved on the bare wood (pre finish or not). One reason I like it is that it is a lot cheaper than Alder, Maple, Cherry, etc. Here is one sample, you can see more at my link in my Friends Of The Creek Page. This one is 12" diameter255656

Nice design! Yes, basswood is not very dense and engraves beautifully, and cuts like butter. I have used it a lot for wooden postcards for Boy Scout Camp stores.
