Thought I'd post a few pics of my spalted hackberry bowl. This is one finished of many rough outs of this beautiful spalted hackberry. Finished with a spray, non yellowing ,matte finish. Measures 11" dia x 4" deep. Sorry if the pics are too small. Not sure how to make them bigger..255411255412255413

Now that is spalting! Very nice bowl you turned Anthony. Did you find or buy the wood like that, or did you mix up something to put on the wood to get the spalting growing yourself? I have several piles of maple I started late last summer with different mixes on them but I have yet to get anything as nicely spalted as this yet.

Hackberry sometimes spalts in amazing ways like this example, and the process is enhanced by the slight sweetness of the sap. Unfortunately there is a short time between spalt and punk, and the sweet sap also attracts carpenter ants which hollow out the trunks for their colonies.

Awesome spalt. Some of the best I've seen. You caught it at just the right time and did it proud. It would make some beautiful hollow forms too.

That is the most dramatic spalting I've seen. I was so taken with the grain pattern I almost forgot to look at the shape of the bowl. Very nice and good choice of finish. I hate to see such a light colored wood yellowed by tung oil or varnish.

Got the wood for free. Electric dept. dropped it and I was the lucky new owner. We left it sitting outside for about 6 months and then started roughing it out. We let mother nature do the spalting for us.

Thank you for all the comments. I need to have better pics to show the bowls shape better.
