You need to make a box joint jig or better yet buy an INCRA I-BOX and use your Hinge Crafter to bore the hinge pin holes. Lots of pics of wooden hinges on INCRA's site.

As to selection of wood- use dense hardwood and be careful of grain orientation- grain parallel to the fingers otherwise they will just snap off.

I have made some but have really not used them, I have tested them and found that they were a lot stronger then I thought they would be.
I just made them out of scrap that I had and it was walnut and hard maple. I glued a set to some boards just to try and I really had to work at it to break them, I used 5 knuckles on each hinge. The one thing I can really say is watch it when you glue them up and don't get any on the knuckles.

I used the Incra Ibox and the Hinge Master.

Darn, Bill, those look great. I feel inspired to try a few by hand.
