Ok , now the gripe. I've posted some stuff before, and the posts just seem to go dead in the water rather quickly. I posted "Belated Gloat" and it's now on page 8 with over 200 views. There has not been one single reply, and that is proof to me people don't even take the time to look at some people's posts even after clicking on them. I put in 4 or 5 pictures with 2 of them showing a brand new tool that no one has come up with yet. If I saw something like that in a picture, my curiosity would get the better of me, and I would at least pose a question as to what is that and how is it used???? I'm starting to believe either those 200 plus people are brain dead, or you don't bother to look at content. ......... Jerry (in Tucson)

Jerry,

We had exchanged emails concerning your new "Contraption" as you called it :D I don't remember now if I posted in the thread or not.........[I have just been so busy, that I have met myself coming out the door]......I will say that your item is very innovative and for the folks..........a little teaser........

This item can be utilized to turn off the bottoms of bowls with no vacuum chuck........check out Jerry's post and see!

I am sure that insulting people will help you get more posts. It must already be working, because I just posted.

All that commented get "F's", except for Roger on his second post..
You're more curious about a particular post than others... good for you. But calling me braindead because I choose to read a post without necessarily having anything useful to add to it, well... I'm sure you can imagine what I think of your opinion at this point in time. Telling every commenter they get an "F" because they posted in the thread but didn't comment on your design, well, that's just a slap across everyone's face...

But hey, I posted instead of just looking, right?

how does one even respond to a rant like that???

Ron Radliff

I login daily and read many of the posts in this forum but rarely post anything. I use this, and other forums, as a learning experience. I've been turning for 3 years now, but can't hold a candle to the vast majority of the stuff I see here. I'm in no position to be critical of anyone's work and adding a "gee that sure looks nice" seems to be pointless after glowing remarks from some of the true artists and craftsmen on this forum have added their comments.

To be sure, I do take many of the posts here under advisement as a learning opportunity. I even go out into the shop and attempt a new (to me) technique or to copy someone's turning before it ends up as shavings on the floor, but I don't necessarily post a response.

Many forums (of various types) tend to get carried away with pointless responses to an original post. I frequently look to the internet to find solutions for computer problems. For instance, I may have a problem where my hyperstatic framus doesn't articulate harmonically when the inverse bandwidth is modulated by the half life of the dofarcus. I google the problem and find someone who has posted the exact same problem followed by 47 posts basically saying "me too" and not one solution. Those 47 posts added absolutely nothing to the conversation and as a result, both the original poster and I still have a problem that needs to be solved.

Therefore, to avoid being one of the 47 posts in the example above, I keep my big yap shut. On the other hand, I too have posted an original post or two to a forum here and there and noted many views with no replies. So in that reguard, I feel your pain, but I also understand that if no one has anything to add to the conversation, there's no reason to speak up.

But that's just me.

Jerry,
Having gone back to look at your previous thread, I can admit not paying enough attention to see the stabilizing wheels you show in the second and third pictures. Sorry you were disappointed that none of us saw them and inquired. I suspect that many, like myself, had our minds on a wood gloat not a new contraption by someone who has proven themselves to be quite innovative. Having said that, I think you should have posted two threads; one discussing the wood John gave you and the second showing the new gadget.
I can understand your rant, though I don't really agree with how you stated it. I like to have my threads responded to as do the rest of us. I suspect most saw this as a wood gloat and those often don't get a lot of views.
How about posting a thread about the interesting looking addition to your lathe. If it is half as useful as your faceplate, I'm sure there will be interest.
And for the rest of us, just because someone tees off on us a bit is no reason for bitter responses. This site has always been a class act. Sometimes it requires biting your tongue to keep it that way.

Ralph, there is a setting "Edit Ignore List" under Settings (upper right corner of page). I've not had any reason (before today) to try it out so I can't comment on how well it does/doesn't work.

I guess I'm probably about #127 on Mr. Marcantel's "brain dead" list... Apparently I was completely fooled about the true intent of the post. Was pretty sure the gist of "Belated gloat" was about another Creeker making a generous gift of wood, not about the OP lobbying for pats on the back about a new tool.

Holy cow people.... what in the world got into everyone?

Faust, thank you for your post, you stated my view exactly.

Jerry, while I understand your frustration, I recommend a different tact when trying to bring something to everyone's attention. I highly suggest that you start a separate thread explaining your new invention.

Man, I feel your pain, Bro! I can't count the number of times I have gone to bed heartbroken because so many people I thought were my friends ignored one of my posts on an internet forum. I mean, like, this is my life going by and I'm sharing it with you and you don't even care. But you have all the time in the world to post a reply to some bozo with a picture of a crappy little turning that totally destroys a gorgeous piece of wood that could have made, in the right hands, a world class piece of art. And you are all like, "Hey, nice piece, man." Thanx for nuttin! Talk about unappreciative.... and don't even get me started on how many of my "friends" don't "like" my Facebook page!

But, hey, Jerry, here's a foolproof way to get more attention for your posts. Create a bunch of alternate identities on every forum you participate in. You can even slurp some pictures from the web of some other guy's face to use as an "avatar". Then, every time you post something, you can reply to your own post using these other identities. Then other people will see that your post is getting a lot of action and they will want to get in on it too. It's kind of like seeding a gold mine or sending a shill to the game table in a casino. It works every time. Human nature. Those ungrateful saps will never have a clue that they have been sucked in.

In the alternative, you could just not worry about it.

David, I don't have to do that. I'll just reply to my own post. Go to Belated Gloat, and you'll see I've replied 5 times, generating all kinds of traffic. Man, life's good........ hehehe....... Jerry (in Tucson)

Robert, I'm working on it. I need some time to articulate and get my thoughts in order before I take back anything, because I'll probably just step in it again........ I will say I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but not yet for saying anyone is brain dead..... It's amazing, after seeing all the resposes, of all people, you are the one I thought I might just have a need to be looking over my shoulder periodically, but your first and second response was a lot mellower than some.. I'm going to say it, I'm sorry I offended you, Robert McGowen, Allan F., Steve S., Ron R., Allen T., Roger C., ChiP S., and Al W. I'm not sure about DD, but that's all I got. If any others think I owe them an apology, get a grip first......... Jerry

No apology need for my part as I wasn't offended. I just tried to explain why I, and possibly others, am among the numbers that have read a particular post, but haven't replied. I try to live by the old saying "it's better to look like a fool than to open your mouth and erase all doubt". Needless to say, I don't always succeed.

And I assume that you are referring to my avatar. That was taken while at work around my 25th year on the Big City police department. I retired with 29 years. And you are correct.......most people never saw me coming!

Yep,Robert, that picture is intimidating. I was expecting a motorcycle gang to show up here any day now. From now on, I must tread lightly.

Jerry, I was out of town February 2, celebrating my 30th wedding anniversary, so I didn't even look at your post. I've seen it now (and it's back on page 1, probably because of this thread), but I just don't have anything to say about it. You can't have it both ways - if you want a lot of replies, you're going to see a lot of attaboys. Thoughtful responses will only come from those who are really interested. And I agree with those who have pointed out that the title of the thread makes it a real stealth post.

I see SMC as an improvement, in some ways, on my weekly men's breakfast group as a method of socializing. With the breakfast group, I have to get up, get dressed, be on time, politely listen when someone is going on and on, not interrupt, and go home when it's over. If the guys stop coming, the whole thing falls apart. With SMC I can sit here in my PJs, read what I want when I want, write when I want rather than waiting for someone to finish, and it's never over because there are enough Creekers out there that someone is almost always online. As an additional benefit, girls are allowed, but only the ones who are interested in what we're talking about.

I understand the frustration when no one responds and appreciate the warm glow when a thread I've started generates a lot of interest, especially if that interest results in a lot of positive responses. These are the cost and the benefits of posting a thread on SMC. Politeness is one of the basic rules and I think you've crossed the line in both of these threads. But we're all human and you're not the only one to go on a rant. I've certainly had my moments.

A lot of times, I'm reading with a cat in my arms and a cup of coffee in my hand. Typing a response requires both hands and it has to be really important for me to disturb the cat and put down the coffee. I've enjoyed most of your posts, even though I didn't respond to many, if any. Being not cat-worthy is not the same as being uninteresting. I'm not offended that you haven't responded to all my posts, but I appreciate the responses you have taken the time to do.

Thanks to Faust and Steve for thoughtful and measured responses. Jerry, with 1500 plus posts, I can't remember a response from you-It offends me not at all. Ya pays yer money and takes yer chances. The responses I have received from folks have served to advance my turning skills immeasurably and have been truly appreciated. This has been, and remains a valuable and genteel site and I certainly hope it will remain so.
