I have a large picture window on the front of my 100yr old bungalow. Double glazed, some previous owners solution to a pair of rotten double hungs in a bump out. Has the aesthetic appeal of a bad strip mall. I'm thinking about making a grid for each side of the window to break up this expanse of glass a bit, strictly cosmetic. I seem to have read there is a tenacious tape that can be used to hold such grids to a window, can't find it anywhere. Any ideas?

Why not just tape the tape to the window, in a grid pattern, and leave it at that? You'll be done in 10 minutes.:)

Just do what they do with the commercial ones.
Cut a thin kerf in each leg of the grid.
Take some stiff clear plasitc strips the width of the leg and bend them using a heat gun so they are at a greater than 90* angle - 120* is about right.
Stick them in the kerf and stick the gird in the window. The tension will hold the grid in place.

I'll see if I can find a picture online of what I'm talking about.
Our house had them (grids) on all the windows and my wife hated them so she took them out and tossed them.

Ok - I looked online and can't find a picture.

Home Depot and Lowes both carry 6 packs of retaining clips though for about 5 bucks.
You need to drill a hole in the window frame to use them though.

Thanks! They have the right stuff. Double sided glazing tape. Going to try it.

This sounds like an infomercial. Just press it on, presto, leaded glass window. Set it and forget it. Now with new built in tap light.

It sort of does. But this stuff is no joke. I think 3M makes a version for the window industry, not sure I can source that in smaller quantities? Most of my experience is with TDl sash so there is no need for grills. I have a terrible vision of me laying in the front yard on my back with a sash grill permanently stuck to my face with super tape. There is appearantly a primer available that "prepares" the glass and makes the bond quite permanent. It doesn't slice, it can't even dice, but it does stick tenaciously. Like waterproof turners tape on steroids.

amazon shows quite a few very high bond tapes in small quantities like http://www.amazon.com/CS-Hyde-Transfer-Acrylic-Adhesive/dp/B004V40EXE

Oh, that might be the ticket. VHB is just the stuff I was thinking of, and there it is on small sizes. And available amazon prime. Only thing left to figure out os color. I'm seeing clear, grey, black, and white. Not sure which color looks the least conspicuous on the back of a grill. There will be a matching grill on each side with 1/2" double insulated glass between. Its a bit spendy to buy one of each color and experiment. Hmmm

Take some before and after pictures for us. I have half a houses of leaded class and the other newer style windows.
