I had never made anything from Silk Oak before. I love the grain in this wood. Thank you Kathy for introducing me to this wonderful wood.

This is a full sized communion chalice - 10" x 3-1/4". If it was for display I would have turned a smaller stem, but I want it to me sturdy for years of use. It fits well in the hand.

Currently just a coat of oil. Later I'll use WOP so the grape juice doesn't soak into the wood.

Close-ups are to show the fascinating grain. On the inside rim of the first photo, there is a grain pattern that looks like stitches.

Beautiful. Those are challenging forms to turn. Nicely done.

Turning really opened my eyes to the possibilities of oak. There are a lot of varieties. Nice stuff you got there.

You're welcome Brian!
Nice job on the chalice, looks like it will hold up for years of use. The form shows the grain really well.

Prashun, silk oak isn't a true oak, it just has a leaf similar to an oak leaf. It's also known as lacewood, although there are other woods also called lacewood. I've only turned it green, but it seems quite a bit softer than oak.
