In the middle of sanding I found a little spot I missed in the rim. So I sanded a little more and a little more, and the spot got longer and longer.

I think I will like this one better without a raised rim. :rolleyes:

Most turners would just turn off the rim if they wanted to change the desing, but I guess sanding it off works too :eek:;)

This is actually one of my favorite pieces of wood. Not just cocobolo in general, but this particular piece.

I bought 2 pieces of Cocobolo from the same lot many years ago at Reel Lumber in Riverside. Since then they have become a Krenov-style rectangular block plane, an experimental infill smoother made from an old Stanley #3, an infill made with the coaching of Ron Brese, and two turned bowls.

Full agreement that you are better off without the rim. Some design opportunities are harder to come by than others.
