I've never been much of a football fan, at least not on TV, so I seldom watch the Super Bowl. Today, while all the pregame hype was probably going on I went out to the garage and re-turned one of the old bowls I have. This one is another Siberian Elm bowl. I tried to do a little something with this one so it wouldn't be just another bowl. But it still is pretty much just another bowl. I undercut the rim, left the rim wide and threw in a little bead on the rim just for the heck of it. Other than that it's just a 11" x 3" bowl. The wood is kind of pretty, even more so than the pictures show.

This is the roughed bowl I started with. Roughed for 30-40 years and still pretty round....

This is the finished bowl. Finish is AO and just rubbed down by hand.

Kurt,
I thought I was the only one who spent the game in the shop. Anyway, it's too bad the wood wasn't a burl or you could have made a Super Bowl Burl Bowl. However, despite the fact it is not burl, it is a really pretty piece of wood. In fact, a "Particularly Pretty Superbowl Not Burl Bowl". I like the fact that you still use a faceplate. Nothing holds better. Do you find a way to remove the holes or just let them show?

What you did sure beats watching the first half blow-out. Second half was a real contest.

Faust, I actually rarely use a face plate. These bowl are from a bunch I "inherited" http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?197852-30-40-or-so-year-old-roughed-bowls&highlight= Hiding the holes from the faceplates has been the one thing I haven't found a good way to do yet. The holes are too deep to turn away, filling them seems to make them stand out even more. So I just leave them. But I agree, the wood has been very pretty wood so far.

Probably better than just an average bowl. Very nice. I missed the lights going out, guess they came back on??

Curt,
During my first try as a wood turner, probably 30 years ago, we had no chucks and everything was turned on a face plate. I still have a decent size piece of green felt we used to cover the bottom of the bowl.

You made the old wood come to life. The bead is a neat extra along with the undercut wide rim. Looking forward to seeing more tricks with the old wood.
