Hello, It's time to play "What Is It" (again ;))

I acquired this item in with a bunch of stuff (junk) from a retail store closing and I have no clue as to what it is!
The handle is 4 1/2" long and is aluminum (reminds me a lot of the old Hurst T-handle shifter grips....remember those? ) From one end there is a straight (tapered) hardened steel "shaft" with a bead on the end and it protrudes 2" from the handle....On the other end is a (tapered) hardened steel "shaft" with a curve or hook at the tip (also with a bead on the end)
The O.A. length is 8 1/2"

Whoa. I see them now. It looks dangerous.

Knowing you have this, I'm wishing I was less confrontational.

It looks to me like a leather working tool.

I think my dentist has one of those.

I agree...only it seems much bigger in person:)

The hooked ends seems as if this is for pulling springs onto some sort of anchor.

Mike,

That looks like the tool used to tie rebar. Either bulk wire or "bag ties" with looped ends. At least that's what the hooked end is for, i've not seen one with a straigt end like yours.

I also think it is for pulling some sort of string or ribbing for upholstery. I think if it did something with metal wire it would have more wear on it plus it doesn't swivel so twisting isn't really all that easy with this. I have to get up at 6:00 and drive an hour and a half to work tomorrow morning and now I can't stop wondering what that is. Thanks a lot:) at least my mind has drifted from my table saw slider addition.

Looks to me like it would work pretty good to put glass in cars using those rubber grommets.

It's a tool used for installing one-piece rubber gasket in cars windows. Here's a link for a similar one for sale:

tooling is pretty close to installing the filler cord in escape hatches in airplanes/helos

Thanks for all the replies (and guesses :p) but I believe Keith has pinned it down!
I didn't mention before, but the closing retail store was a Kmart (where I worked part time for 2 years) so I didn't think the tool would have been use for anything relating to the operation of the store....

.....In the early to mid '80's the store did have a Car Care Center that did oil changes, shocks, tires, etc. but I don't believe they messed with any window moulding gaskets(?) ......but you never know!!! :)

p.s. - Come to think about it....in the early '80's, the sliding back glasses for pick-ups were pretty popular and a lot of garages did install them (I've installed several but I used a heavy cord soaked in WD40 around the gasket) and I know that Kmart sold the back glasses.....Hmmmmmm, maybe they installed them too, and the tool was use to help out with stubborn gaskets (?)

Strange that you noticed the tools your doctor used while cutting you? When he did me I laid there eyes closed trying to breathe as best I could and get out of there as fast as possible never saw a single operating tool the whole time and didn't want to. The whole procedure was very uneventful and I was surprised that it wasn't the horror story I had heard about. I didn't have any real lingering issues with the procedure and didn't really lose any work or play time over it.

I have always been interested in what goes on when being worked on. The tools may have improved since I got mine 25 years ago. And yes, it was a piece of cake; done on Friday, working on Monday. No nightmares and a way easier process than a tubal ligation for a woman.

I know it's not a tool for tieing rebar, they have an offset so you can crank it to twist the wire..
