A bronze hammer head I made for a friend. Bronze not brass cause its a bit harder. But with one big flaw, but its too late to fix it now!

sorry for the upside down pic, can't seem to get the pic posts figured out on my new iPad. But upside down ain't thereal problem here.

Wow, accidentally made it lighter than air, huh? :D

I see that the cross pein is set at something less than 90° to the axis of the eye.

Time to turn it into a mini-bronze axe!

As a sideways lefty, I think that would work well for starting brads and the like. Give you $20 for a finished hammer! :)

That's totally something I would do. At any rate, the workmanship is quite nice.

Plug it with ebony, redrill and call the error inlay!

Well the cross pein is exactly square, but it's off 90 degrees. Should be vertical. Actually it's the cross hole that's off. But it Is what it is now.

I vaguely remember one creeker did exactly that with a hammer that they built. In my mind, it was George (because he always makes these beautiful things, and the hammer in question looked really nice).

So it's a straight pein hammer instead of a cross pein. Just tell people you meant to make it that way. They are much more rare to find -- and much more useful for certain jobs.

How does bronze compare to brass for turning?

The chips are continuous so they get stringy, I grind a chip breaker into the tool bit so they break. I hate dodging stringy chips slinging off the chuck! You gotta run a bit slower rpm but still cuts much easier than steel.

I fixed it. Turned it into a ball pein. The ball pein is pinned and silver soldered to the brass head.

No,I have not plugged a hole in a hammer!!:) It would be a little hard to accidentally mill the eye sideways.
