Laser carriage not moving

My Alpha LE950 Laser carriage is not moving.
Carriage moves manually with power off, Limit switches test is ok, Voltage test shows steppers are OK.
When I press the arrow keys to move the carriage display reads ''overstep area''
Laser is not firing either, Preadjust or test is not working.
Door sensor and water pump switch are working.

Any help appreciated

Hi Walter,
Work area settings are X 00800, Y 00400, Z 00100 ....same as the default settings.
On the Main board the run light is off ...it only lights on power up.
On startup it beeps for about 10 sec. then later another beep like it's doing it's startup routine but the carriage does not move.
Display panel Screen light fades at times, seems to be caused by the connection to the 9pin socket ...menus still work
Suggestion so far is to change mainboard ( US$ 1250) and display (US$215) which I'm trying to avoid.
