I just dropped a Pignut Hickory that ended up being hollow, except for about 1 & 1/2 inch on the outside edge. I will get a 3 foot section of that when I take the stump off. I would like to preserve the hollow stump as a garden piece. Any suggestions about how I might preserve the stump as a planter or garden interest piece would be appreciated. ''The kids have big plans for making this into a super Mothers day present. I will try to get a picture posted later on when I get the stump sawn off.

Hickory is not terribly rot resistant, but sealing the ends (epoxy comes to mind) would be a start. Next step would be applying a finish everywhere else.

Here in Kansas stumps left in the ground seem to be a good invitation to carpenter ants and termites. Just gets them that much closer to your house. I would think it would be a bigger problem in your area.
