During a recent trip to New Zealand and Australia I was able to meet up with 3 turners along the way, Terry Scott and Ian Outshoorn in Auckland and Anna Dawes in Sydney. All 3 gave me wood to bring home and I dropped off a lump of Mesquite with Ian!

One of the pieces I got from Anna was this block of White Top Eucalyptus burl. I wanted to do something worthy of the wood (and the effort it took to get it home to Texas with all the other wood I collected) so I decided to try my hand at a hollow form, my first. Here's the result:

The form is 5.5" x 3.5", finished with 2 coats of Danish Oil and buffed. Very different wood to turn, no curlies, mostly chips.

I may try a finial later, but will be out of the country for the next 3 months so it will have to wait!

Kelvin, that is stunning color and you did it justice. That one will end up in your biography!

I ended up with a pen blank of some of that wood. Really kinda curious how it will turn out... Looking at your HF, I'm excited! That turned out really nice, and I agree with Brian that that'll have to be a keeper!

Kelvin, what kind of problems did you encounter crossing international lines with the wood? What were the criteria for allowing it into the US? When I bring stuff back from Canada in my SUV, customs checks it for bark and places critters might be hiding.

Hard to believe that's your first hollow form. Looks great!

I agree with Doug. That seems like some challenging wood for a first hollow form (which I have not yet attempted myself). I just keep coming back to this page to look at it.

Fred, it seems basically the same in most countries; no bark and no bug/worm holes. Aussie and NZ are very strict but I had no issue with what I took there. The US Customs form doesn't even mention wood, it includes "plants" but I didn't figure a waxed lump of burl really fell into that category

Hard to believe that's your first hollow form. Looks great!

First with a small opening. This is 3/4", previous smallest was around 2" - and I could see inside!
