Where to eat in Savannah?

My wife and I will be visiting Savannah and would like to get some suggestions on restaurants that are a must! Would like choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was hoping Belinda might have a place or two to recommend, or any other local for that matter.

Most of the places I'm going to recommend are downtown, as that's where most people stay when they come to Savannah. If you need any specifics or have other questions feel free to message me.

Breakfast
If you don't mind the wait or the drive out to Tybee Island try The Breakfast Club. My personal favorite is The Exchange Tavern on River Street. I would recommend the Seafood Omelet or Eggs Benedict with crab. Clary's is another local favorite.

Lunch
Churchill's Pub is good and won't break the bank. Blue Moon Brewery is also good. Stay away for Five Guys Burgers. If you like Mexican food try One Eye's Lizzie's on River Street or Cilantro's on Bay. For real local flavor and southern food try Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room.

Dinner
I'm a big fan of the Olde Pink House. The Chart House is good, but pricey. Huey's on River Street is also very good. Tacky but different is The Crab Shack on Tybee Island. Vic's on the River. Elizabeth on 37th (do NOT walk to or from after dark) If you are willing to drive to to the westside area Pearl's Saltwater Grille has good food and a great river view.

Dessert and Drinks
LuLu's Chocolate Bar is a must.

Vinnie Van Go Go's in City Market - cash only.

There are several good Italian restaurants but I can't think of the names off the top of my head. Really, if you stay away from the chains and Paula Deen's places there aren't many bad places to eat in Savannah. Most of the places I recommended have menus online.

From the river street/city market area do not walk past MLK Street. From City Market to Broughton do not walk past Broughton after dark. If you want to have dinner at the Mansion on Forsyth drive or take a cab. I don't want to alarm you but we did have a shoot out at the upper end of Bay a few weeks back and it happened in the middle of the day, so be aware of your surroundings. Again, message me for anything in particular. When are you planning to visit? I may be able to recommend some events during that time.

We both like Paul Deans resturant. Better be there early too.
The Crab shack has great seafood. Not a fancy place but they have aligators motes surrounding the place so your kids might get a kick out of that

This past summer while we were in Savannah and Tybee Island, we ate at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House (Paula Deen's brother) and enjoyed it.

I forgot about B Matthew's for breakfast and lunch. Haven't eaten there in a few years but I like their Black Eyed Pea sandwich so much I started making them at home. Made them last week as a matter of fact.

By all means, if you feel you must, eat at Paula's. As a local I just feel that you can find much better food without the wait and the hype. Several years ago I volunteered in a county south of us where wildfires were raging for weeks on end. Paula's restaurant and I split the bill on 75 (I think) meals for a group of volunteer firefighters. I picked of the meals from the "back door" by the storeroom. Gallons on top of gallons of turnips, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes - just like your average school cafeteria would stock. Now, Mrs. Wilkes' place, on the other hand - that's a different story. Family style large table dining. Pass me them biscuits, and such. If you go through to the back door of Mrs. Wilkes' on a spring or summer day you have to walk between three well fed southern ladies who, on any given day, will be shelling peas or butterbeans, or shucking corn - fresh.

If you see any place that serves Hunter Cattle Co. grass fed beef, please eat there and help support my friends at Hunter Cattle. (shameless endorsement I know, but they are good people)

And while you are walking along River Street, stop in at "River Street Sweets" and help yourself to some pecan pralines........

If you have never been to Savannah, I would also recomend a carriage tour. They can point out a lot of things that the average tourist would miss.

Here is the source for everything going on in Savannah "The Do". It comes out on Thursday. You will be here for First Saturday on the River, which is monthly Arts & Crafts festival, as well as the kick off of Black Heritage Month, and the Eastman Gun Show - so things downtown will be very busy. Weather looks good with maybe a light jacket for evenings. High Saturday 59, 62 on Sunday.
