I haven't been able to give back much but thought this might be one people would like. I threw this together over the weekend as a birthday gift for my son, sort of a Lord of the rings theme, I used an "Elvish" font for his name (Gregory) and found a Dwarfish runes font that I used for various other personalized words, the verse at the bottom is the first line from the song that the dwarves sing in the book (and movie) the Hobbit. I just borrowed some ideas that I have seen over the years of searching this site, the chess pieces I used from the Epilog chess set. I just resized the OG live hinge box file and scaled it up for 4mm BB from HD with a laquer finish and a piece of cherry from laserbits. I think my next one I will use a piece of white corian and fill with black. I'm posting the file I used in case anybody wants it, it's sized for my 32"x18" ULS machine. The chess board itself is about 9.75", I wasn't sure what to do to hold the chess pieces so I just grabbed a sample box I had laying around and put some extra walls in it. I wish I had more time to make it a little nicer but My son was very happy with it. Enjoy!

PS. Oops, file's too big, I'll post separate.

Trying to figure out how to save the chessboard part from 2mb to 488kb, will post it asap.

Trying to figure this out, ok, the file I used was way to big to post, but I was able to take a piece of it and save it so you can just duplicate it to reproduce the whole board, sorry for the mess, I was hoping this would be easier, but at least it's recreatable for someone. the square holes fit the 3mm acrylic perfectly. I just used white and black acrylic for the pieces, the circles are for checkers.251389

Chad, it mic's at .18" so I assume it's 4mm, but that would actually be closer to 4.5mm so maybe it's 3/16"? Can't remember, I've had it laying around for awhile.

That's a unique take on a chess board, very personalized for a young kid - plus it has its own storage, good going! I like the squares with the holes, very nice design.

cheers, dee

Thanks Dee, that means a lot coming from you. :) I think I will do more as gifts for friends and family and will post the refinements/improvements. The "young kid" is actually turning 23, (I can't be that old!)
PS. Just joined the grandparent club last year also!

Also, thought this would be nice for someone to have, some celtic clipart I've gathered including a celtic style chess board in case you want to change the theme. Also the Tolkien fonts I used.
