Whew. I spent my evening flattening the sole of a Stanley #110 on a course diamond stone. That is alot of work. Enjoyable and mindless. My arms are now made of rubber. I really appreciate how much work a guy like Terry Hatfield puts into one of those smoothers he rehabs. I could works twice as hard with half the result I bet. I'm lucky, the plane isn't in too bad of shape. Needs flattening but the japanning is good and I can work with the blade. It has the sweetheart logo on the blade. I can't remember where I got the plane I think at one of the local antique stores around here for a few bucks but I can't imagine selling it after I finish fixing it up. Can you say a penny an hour? By the way Dave Anderson, after you mentioned Garrett Hack steering people toward British infill planes I had to go back to his book and read up on them. I then saw a Spiers smoother in one of the local antique stores and now I feel it calling to me. I'm not jumping on it yet due to price but it REALLY felt nice in my hands!

John,

I cheat.

Makes the inital flattening quick and easy. I finish by hand on a piece of granite with 280 wet and dry paper glued to it and then polish with the 3M wheel. Still takes a while but the edge sander does 90% of the work.

Terry's got a great system - he hooked me up and helped me flatten a Record #7 jointer's sole a while back. It's a very nice shop he has....

Terry, I have been busy with home painting, etc., and then I am booked solid through the first 3 weekends in May. Hopefully we can touch base again!

Cheers,
Marc

John, I am sure the satisfaction of using your re-habbed plane will be more than worth the effort. Be sure to show us the finished product!

I will....After I go to my machine shop buddies house and cheat a bit! Seriously it is amazing how nice the bottom feels now. I am afraid that I have a little ways to go in getting the bottom flat. By the way does anyone know the primary uses for the Stanley 110? I figure it is just a general LA block plane.
