Here are a few shots of my continued journey along the path or at least sort of in the same direction Mr. Harvey Fein.
This is a maple bowl about 14" in dia. and 2" deep. Finished with Walnut oil.

I love things that are clearly impossible with the tools & skills I know about.

Very nice work. Is the "ring" on the back a bead or is it a separate piece of wood?

Hey Greg. I am certainly not skilled enough to put a ring on the back, he .... he.
Nope, this sort of piece is made from one chunk of wood. The theory is that the slots are cut first. THEN the back side is finished leaving whatever rings are required to support the sections. Sort of backwards to what we usually do for bowls etc.

How do you make the cuts, if that is not giving away a trade secret?

That's beautiful. In addition to the obvious, I really like the little bead on the inside where the bowl meets the rim. If you're feeling generous, I second Brian's question: how'd you make the cuts???

Gorgeous. I also second Prashun on the bowl lip bead. That's an especially nice touch.

I really like it, got me scratching my head how you managed it.

I really like it, got me scratching my head how you managed it.

My guesses:
He is really good with a chisel.
Dremel and a steady hand
Router jig with about 50 indexed stops.

Thanks everyone for your comments and interest. It appears that there are more questions than C & C but of course that is just fine by me.

i could take a few paragraphs or pages to detail the process I use but it is definitely not my process. I was just a humble turner trying to find myself until I discovered Mr. Harvey Fein.

He explains the process much better than I ever could.

Now if I can only expand on what I have learned. Every step along the journey is fun and interesting. Many mis-steps but at each turn a chance to learn!

Please don't hesitate to pm me if there is anything more I can provide.

Very nicely done. I was fascinated by his bowls and setup when I saw it for the first time. Looks like you have got a good handle on it!
