Pretty cool ideas in a $300 ceiling power cord!

Yeah, read about it somewhere last week. Ridiculous.

I seem to remember that it made it onto two different TV shows that I watch. One of them is titled "I Want That". Well, I do want that; and I will continue wanting that because I don't want to pay $300 for it.

Lots of nice things about it I think. For my uses, however, I have a much cheaper one that I purchased from Sears about 10 years back. Not as nice, but it works and has a utility light attached to it.

There will be a fool out there that will pay 300 bucks for an over-rated extension cord. LOL

Very cool. I just may buy one.....right after I finish paying off my Ferrari! I am in the market for a new cord real for the garage, that's probably not it.

so yeah this is expensive...what do you guys offer as an alternative. I've been thinking I need a cord reel-and maybe it will help me keep my shop cleaner...but not sure what to get or what kind.

suggestions?

Geez....For that kind of cash, the guy could have at least made them here in the states!!

The Woodwhisperer had a giveaway for one of those last summer. That's the only what I would obtain one.

Very cool. I don't have any trouble with the cord rewinding into the cheap-o Harbor Freight 40ft x 12ga reels I have been using for almost 8 years. I would imagine the good ones work even better although I'm not sure what that would be. The auto rewind feature is cool. I wonder what the replacement cord costs?

While this is out of the price range of most of us, I can see where safety minded production shops could buy them. The spring wound model sold by Rockler is about $90 now. The extra cost isn't much for larger companies scoring brownie points with OSHA and their insurance company, demonstrating they have the best in safety gear.

I recollect having a cheap white metal enclosed reel when I was a kid that we hung on the ceiling of the garage. My dad would not have paid more than $10-15 for it.

This may work just as well

One difference with this one is it has 12 ga. wire vs 14 ga. for the Rockler and 16 ga. for the Northern Tool.

The maker of this may be related to the people that make Monster Cable. :)

Craftsman has one for under $50. I assume the mechanism is similar to what I have now, and it works just fine. It has 14 gauge wire. SearsItem# 03483929000 | Model# 83929

Rockler has one for $100 (Item number 20323), and it has 12 gauge wire (a better bet depending on what you will connect).

If you really want to go industrial, however, things like that listed above, and the COXREEL, all sell for about $300.

That one is only 16/3, better off with the one from Rockler for $100, it is 12/3.

Dont forget to add the cost of running a 20 amp circuit in your ceiling if you dont already have one. Or does the 300 bucks cover that? :) That is sure nice and expensive. Something I think I can live without. Ill continue to have cords dangling form the ceiling.

I had the craftsman one with the yellow cord, one day I noticed that there was a funny smell in the shop and my cord no longer worked. Turns out the contacts in the reel shorted and fried the plastic housing. Kinda freaked me out so I went back to regular extension cords. Until it went bad I absolutely loved having it, and will probably spring for a better one some day.

You could plug your $180 cutting board into it.

Hmm, I'm disappointed. For $300 I was expecting voice control!

Lee Valley makes a nice 12/3 retractable reel as well.

The way I see it, owning one of these is like owning a truck with optional power windows & locks. Until you have used it, it seems like a waste of money.

JohnEarlier you advocated offering someone less than scrap metal price for a vintage 15" Rockwell drill press, less than even a Harbor Freight cordless drill. You called that a "basket case." Now you really compare this type of cord to power windows and locks and imply it's not overpriced. To say the least, the way you see things is unique.

Festool owners will be lining up for this one. That's evil. But if it was painted green and offered by another company for even more cash, it would sell like hotcakes.

I saw this in Family Handyman and went to checkout the website for the thing. Yes, it's cool but a little out of my price range.

Then I saw that they are going to have a garden hose version, and I thought back on how many fights I've had with my wife over years about how she always leaves the $%%^#@ 100' hose lying out in the middle of the yard and I constantly have to move it to mow the lawn, and at $300, I'd probably want this. Then I saw that the garden hose version was going to be $650, and thought to myself that maybe I can just move the stupid hose afterall...

What I saw in the picture was pieces of rusty iron, not a drill press. I'm not into scrapping, so I don't consider the scrap value of a broken tool. This thing on other hand, looks like it's ready to use right out of the box. And like power windows, the extra cost may be justified after using it.

Just needs an LED flashlight and it would be $550 - no sorry - LED work lighting.

Yes please make sure you dont confuse a simple LED flashlight with a complex LED work lighting tool. Shame on you for using both in the same sentence.

This is the one I bought: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Cord-Reel-12awg-x-40-/H5695

Seems to work fine, but it was about $80.
