I was considering purchasing and old Stanley/Baily Compass Plane. There are several different designs/models out there. Is there one model that has proven to be the best design over the years?
Thanks

I bought a used Stanley #113 after reading an article in FWW #227; it was the author's favorite. It is well made, comfortable to use, and cuts beautifully.

Mark, I agree with John on the 113. They are good planes. There are a bunch of others out there though, from woodies to rare collectors types. Others work just as well, but the 113 is easy and a safe bet.

Check out Patrick Leach's Blood and Gore for the Stanley planes.

I have a #20 with SW blade, and used it for one project, it worked fine.
Seems that the blade sharpness, and the grain direction play an important role
