View Full Version : Rather a nice idea if it works well

Being in Ireland & looking at mags that we don't have in the US I came across a chuck that has a backing plate with indexing holes in it & you buy it to fit the spindle thread of your lathe. You can also use the jaws from you existing chuck...Sounds pretty nice. It's called Versachuck. Has anyone used one or know anything about it.

Here's a picture that I got from Google.

What is just as neat they sell different slides that will accept Nova jaws, Oneway jaws, Vicmarc jaws, Axminster jaws, Multistar jaws etc. That is the part that really intrigues me. It is my understanding they are a good product that is very similar to the old Axminster super precision chuck.

Jay,

My Vicmarc chucks all have indexing holes on the back plate. I think there are 24 indexing holes (one every 15 degrees).

Yup, the Grizzly knock off of the Vicmarc 90 has them, too. So does the Hurricane HTC. Now, the interchangeable jaws (from manufacturer to manufacturer is neat), but I don't change jaws anyway... How much is this chuck?

Oh, and to answer your question, no, I have no experience with the Versachuck.

Its about $227 US which is in line for a quality chuck.

Certainly sounds reasonable.

The interchangeable jaws sounds handy. If it is just the ability to index, a universal index attachment is available from Penn State Industries for about $30.00. I think it fits 1" x 8 tpi spindles, or adapters can be used for other spindle sizes.

I like the idea of being able to use multiple jaws. That kinda got my attention.
