View Full Version : Delta mortiser breaking

I've got a Delta mortising machine model 14-650 type 2.

On the casting of the column, at the bottom, the boss that the screw for locking the fence has a crack going around about 60% of it. This crack opens and closes with tightening and loosening the screw.

Has anyone else here had that problem? With that model or the clones of it?

I've discussed this with a tool and die maker. There are ways around it - welding or brazing could be done, but the heat would distort the casting. So no go. There are things to do to essentially build another way to lock the fence down. I'll probably try one of those ideas.

What I don't like is how the new Delta mortisers work. I'm sure they work just fine, but they work differently enough to have a learning curve. If I have to do that, then maybe a better mortiser would be a good idea, if there is such a thing.

Is the Powermatic unit better? I mean the "benchtop" unit. There's no more room in my shop for any more floor standing machines. Not without expanding my shop footprint. I'm not sure my wife will let that happen.
