here's my latest. the plate and spine came from a junk store gent's saw donor with a broken handle, the handle is mine.

Bridger, you MUST have 2 screws in that handle,or it will soon be working loose!!

Very nice shape on the handle.

George, are you saying that the one screw will ultimately just become a pivot point?

the back is mortised deeply and firmly into the handle. there is not much room for a second nut, and this saw will likely be used for light work only. I'm. hoping it holds firm.

I have to agree with George. I think even light use will work the hole into an oval. The slightest wobble or "click" in the sawing motion will mask feedback and impose notches onto the line you're sawing.

Yes,the wood will start to get compressed and it will be downhill from there. Ask yourself why every saw out there has at least 2 screws.

If you don't plan on ever taking it apart could you epoxy the back and plate into the handle? I believe Bob Rozieski (sp?) made a saw with no screws and epoxied it into the hand. Was kinda cool looking.

the wood is mesquite. it doesn't compress easily, and the butt end of the spine is seated against end grain. the spine possibly could slip on the plate or the wood could fail, but at the moment it seems quite solid. we'll see.

Oh, totally forgot to say that I like the shape of the handle. That ogee on the underside of the cheeks is pretty cool looking. Nice work. Beautiful piece of wood too!
