I think its a great lamp , you should give it a bash in acrylic.. could be less visually disturbing than the chequers and zig zags of the burnt wood?

I agree on the checkering. Rolling the edge on a belt sander softens the color of the blocks,
and then a medium color finish would soften the whole look. (Orange/garnet shellac?)

Hugh,

The same folks who sold you boxit now have another macro suite called flexit that will integrate with what you have and let you do conical shapes-- boxit alone will give you curved sides or four sloped sides, but not curved, sloped sides. That feature can make the joints visually "tamer" without further post-processing in the wood shop-- appeased my wife, anyhow :-) Take a look at their "customer-success-flexit/" photos for an example that was made before they updated the code to include a dovetail joint option-- the example pictured has manually-created dovetails. Kinda takes the 'living hinge' to a different level.
