Sorry for typo in title
Ran across this:

The guy sells plans for $24. Looks interesting for a small "bandsaw based" sawmill eaily transportable to the tree.

I guess it might work in the woods if you had a very long extension cord for the electric motor.

It looks to me his design was more for an "urban tree recycler" where he could take it into someone's backyard and saw up the tree. My first three trees I milled (CSM) were from my little 1/4 acre lot at my residence in the suburbs of Washington DC.

His suggested power source is a 220V line like from a dryer outlet. I'm sure my some of my neighbors would have preferred the whine of a 2HP electric motor to my saw.

I met a guy once who had a copy of a Woodmiser mill he had built from the parts breakdown of a Woodmiser mill. He bought the wheels etc from Woodmiser. There are lots of plans you can buy, and parts available for bandmills. Check out forrestryforum.com

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought "This has to be a poorly thought out, extremely dangerous thing to do... too many things could go wrong in the build." But once I saw it's essentially taking a pre-built 14" bandsaw and flipping it on its face, that relieved a lot of worry. That's a cool idea, and it would certainly solve a lot of the lugging huge wood chunks around that still need to be cut up into billets. I may have to keep my eye open for those used 14" bandsaws after all.

Come to think of it, isn't The Creek giving away a 14"er in a few weeks? ;)

Bill Rake used to sell a set of plans for his "Simple Sawmill," that used car tires and wheels for drive. To tension the blade, you added air pressure to the tires. Worked best with steel belted radials. When my son built his place (15+ years ago,) we saw one sitting in a field near his place. Went and asked and girl who answered the door said "Everything you see here was cut on that sawmill." There was a house, horse barn and several out buildings.
