Some more Rockler Store fiddled maple. The brown one was dyed with black first, then sanded back. Next was yellow and red Transtint mixed together. Because the Transtint black has a blue hue, I mixed it some red to make it turn brown instead of green. The finish color reminds me of the gun stock on a Kentucky long riffle. It measures 8" across and 3" deep. The reddish one is about 7" across and 2 1/2" deep. It is turned to about 3/16" in the wall. It was dyed a deep red like black cherry. That was followed by some Colonial yellow witch is somewhat orange in color. All beading on both bowls was done with the usual 3/8" spindle gouge. Both bowls have two coats of oil and 3 coats of lacquer.

Both are beautiful but that "gunstock" piece is spectacular.

Love 'em both! Really nice looking bowls but the fav has to be the dark one. I agree with you, it's got that Kentucky long rifle look to it. Great pieces!

Dyeing fiddleback(sometimes called tiger) or quilted maple really pops the figure, and has caused prices of figured woods like maple to go way up in my area when sold as prepared blanks. Those long rifle stocks were often finished with BLO followed by many years of handling!

Beautiful bowls Bob. Color really shows the figure.

Bob - both bowls are beauties! You did a great job on highlighting all that curl! Another vote for the gun stock coloring!! Very rich and reminds me of root beer!!

Very nice work Bob, I bet it would look even real sharp with just an Tung oil finish :)
