I was trolling on the GCC LaserPro website (please don't turn me in to Epilog!) and saw an interesting showcase item..."creating a fashion t-shirt" using "glue film" and "foil film".......has anyone done this and if so, where do you get the glue film and foil film?

Thanks!

Steve,

I have not done it, but I have seen foil film at Michael's before.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

You can get the foil at Coastal Business Supplies. You have to heat press it.

Thanks Mike.....but I didn't see anything at Coastal that wasn't really vinyl.......and I wonder if the glue film is something like Novacel 4228REF......if you watch the youtube video by LaserPro, it's an interesting process.

Steve,
Check Stahls Cad Cut Fashion Film. It is a heat transfer material on a carrier made from .088 Polyurethane. You will probably have to establish an account to buy direct or get online pricing. If it's for a garment, they probably have it. Also check Fashion Film Electric Foil. They have another film but it is PVC based.

I am well versed in the Fashion films, yet was not aware that you could laser it?

Does anyone have experience with it?

Cheers!

I have not personally cut any of it, but I see no reason why it wouldn't be OK. It's on a mylar carrier and polyurethane is perfectly safe. I suspect some experimentation on settings would be needed.

By the way Andrew, I see this is your first post. Welcome to the Creek!

Steve, not sure how durable it would be. I used to do this for custom certificates and mylar decal.
Basically you laser print (toner) onto your sheet, then take the "heat foil" and wrap it around the
edge.
Then slide it into a heat pouch laminater. The foil sticks to the toner. An interesting process.

It looks a lot like hot stamp foil.

Maybe I should have attached the link to the youTube video showing the glue film and foil......they only engrave the glue film, not the foil......so I guess the foil can be made with vinyl. So I guess it's the glue film that I'm wondering about.

Steve,
Here is an article on the use of foils for garment decoration. Maybe this will be helpful in your quest. http://t-biznetwork.com/screenprinting/specialeffects/using-foil-for-great-effects/ I have used some foil here before, but it was a product from Stahls used with a laser printer.
Here is what your looking for I thnk. http://www.stahls.com/thermo-adhesive and http://www.stahls.com/heat-transfer-foil?icn=topnavtpf&ici=foils

Steve, I searched a bit for this stuff as I may have other uses for it (bonding edges on banners as I'm not that good with a sewing machine.)

Then the obvious came to me......check with a fabric store.... viola!!!

Looks like both the one from Stahls and Joann's would work.......but are they engravable? The glue sheets in the video were engraved to achieve a greyscale image. Aren't there any LaserPro owners on here?

One way to find out...Stahls is good about sending samples or just purchase a small qty. Stahls can also tell you what the base material is for the adhesive. Try their online Chat.

I use the stahls film all the time, only i use my vinyl cutter to cut it.

Reason being you want to cut only the film, not the backing. You then weed out the parts you don't want applied to the shirt, and heat press on.

My experience with the Stahls film has been good. Anything I have ever got at a fabric store has not been professional, so be wary.

I suppose if you could cut only the Film, you could laser it.

Don't cut all the way through, as the backing is used to register the cut pieces on the garment.

Thanks Larry! I have been lurking for a while. So far tons of great info on Lasers!

If anyone needs any info on garment decoration, I run a screen-printing and embroidery shop and have gone through all of the trial and error over the last 8 years, and would love to share info!

Andrew.....did you watch the youtube Laserpro video? The key is the glue film.....no weeding would be required. If you specialize in garment decoration, I would think this process would really interest you.

Andrew,
Your spot on. Stahls is a professional company in garment decoration. You can count on the material you get from them as being good stuff. I am like you, I don't trust materials that come from retail stores very much.

I use the Stahls CadCut stuff once in awhile and they work quite well although I haven't used glue and foils. To me, this looks like a neat idea that's probably too time consuming to be profitable.
