I took inspiration from Baxter (and probably others) and attempted a burned rim platter. It's crazy how the heat from burning the rim causes even dry wood to warp. I used a pen torch that I had laying around, and it worked well. Gave it to my sis for a Christmas present.

Ambrosia maple with WTF sprayed, sanded and buffed. The foot appears taller in the middle pic that it really is.

Very nice looking platter. I plan on trying one of these in the near future. The burning adds nice details. Did you apply finish to the burned portion? It looks kinda flat. If not finished it could rub off I suppose.

I really like it. You did a really nice job on this the burn really sets it off.

Thanks for the comments.
Tim, I applied the same finish on the burned portion as on the rest of the piece. It actually has a glass/gloss finish like the rest. I agree that it looks flat in the pic.

Great job on the WTF...hard to get it that glossy for some reason. Baxter and I talked for at least an hour when I did something like that...I know how you feel! You did a great job Eric. Due to the change in texture of the surface, you won't get the same gloss on the burned surface. But if you think about it...burned stuff usually looks dull. I like the look! this is one I did a while back http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?185453-Walnut-platter&highlight=

That's really nice, Eric. Interesting technique with a good result. I'm not seeing the warp. I'll bet your sister was pleased.
