My daughter needed a wedding present for a friend so I was asked to make something. I turned these from some recycled oak (found 3 harden finishing nails in it). 1 1/2" thick with 3 beads on the edge. I dyed it all black and then steel wool it back before applying a dark brown wipe on stain. The base and bearing are recessed into the top to give a lower appearance. I flatten the top with a home made 5" hard foam sanding mandrel and 100 grit paper. The napkin holder is stained to match. It was turned on a face plate with double stick tape then glue using a space opposite the base to keep them parallel.

That is a beauty. I to like the fact that the bearing race is hidden.
