Use proper safety equipment and try not to use obviously defective wood that could hurt you! Life is precious! This makes 3 tragedies in 2012 among woodturners! :(

I just received some bad news. Vic Budd one of my woodturning friends from the small country town of Griffith has been killed while turning. His wife went to call him for tea and found him on his back with his head split open.
My sympathy goes out to his wife and family.

This is all the info that was posted folks........please........follow all safety guidelines and stand out of the line of fire when starting up and stop and inspect your turning numerous times during the process.......might cost you a few minutes time, but might save your life!

What a tragedy. Accidents happen so fast. Lets all be safe. Prayers and sympathy to the family.

Man, I hope my wife never hears about this.. She'll never let me turn again. Not that I don't wear a face shield, but if that were in the back of her mind every time I went out to turn...

Thanks Roger for posting this. Though I wouldn't wish that kind of thing to happen to anyone, the reminder for us all is always welcome. I can't imagine what that family is going through right now...poor souls.

I am sorry to ask, but what could cause that?

Brian.....several things........

*unstable wood......that has cracks in it or windshake [layers separated by the wind blowing the tree really hard]
*too much speed ......turning too fast on some objects .......see AAW website for safety tips......they have a speed chart and way to figure your maximum speed.
* failure to wear a faceshield......some protection is always better than none.......a very large chunk flying at high speed might defeat a faceshield, but it could make the difference in survival.
* bad tool technique........causing a major catch that explodes a piece of wood.......that has to be a pretty severe catch, and most lathes will shut off if one like that occurs.
* a piece not properly secured in a chuck or faceplate........screws on a faceplate should be long enough and big enough to hold properly.

there are probably more causes.......those just were off the top of my head......others can post what they think of.

Too many turners take safety as wearing a face shield, and the thing of "I have done this a thousand times" well it still doesn't make something unsafe safe.

Common sense doesn't seem to be very common I'm afraid, like watching someone turn on U-tube doesn't mean that's the way to do it.

Glue and or tape doesn't make a unsafe block of wood safe to turn, and especially high speed is a disaster waiting to happen on anything larger than a pen or mill blank.

What is said to be an ACCIDENT isn't, and yes the family is then asking what happened, and are to deal with a loss that should not have happened

If you haven't noticed, life is hazardous to your health. There is a bunch of ways to die and we all will. Find something you enjoy until the time comes but don't take stupid risks.
