After seeing a post by Leo for a handled bowl in which he described using a bandsaw to remove the extra rim, this is what I did with a rough turned bowl that had a wide rim with a large section missing due to section width. It is 15" across the handles, 4 -1/2"H, and about 1/4" wall below rim. The finish is sanding to 400 and then 3 applications of grapeseed oil for general salad use.

The rough turn bowl is shown about 15 -1/2" long dimension and the 14 -1/2" short. A Trent Bosch carving stand was used to hold the bowl after cutting off the extra rim to finish sand the handles and rim area. It makes me want to rough turn some more bowls with rin longer than wide to allow for handles.

I think that turned out very nice Thomas! I need to give that a try one of these days.

Very nice work Thomas. I really like the handles. Our daily user salad bowl is from Bradford Pear and after nearly ten years it still looks great. It's a great wood choice for this kind of piece.

You did a real nice job on the that handled bowl Thomas, and a good wood to use for something like that, looks good :D

Thomas I don't remember showing the "How To" on this forum ??, probably seen the one I did on The Canadian woodworkers forum, as a few turners on there had asked how to go about it, anyway good job :)

"After seeing a post by Leo for a handled bowl..."

Thomas-where is this "how to" post?
I like what you did and want to give it a try. But I can't find the directions here at all.

Leo posted #20 in this thread: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?194919-Finally-some-turnings-again-it-s-been-a-long-while/page2 I thought about tilting my bandsaw table, but was too lazy. I did use my oscillating spindle sander and 5" random orbital sander to smooth out the saw cuts.

Sometimes all it takes is a little idea for inspiration to get you going. That is the good thing about reading the different posts here, even though most will look familiar.

Leo - The little extra detail of the handle lower than the rim adds. I forgot that feature, but then my rim got pretty thin in reshaping the outside. Next time............ Thanks again for inspiration.
