This is one of three bowl I turned from a maple burl given to me by one of our chapter members. It is 13" X 2" finished with many coats of Wipe -On-Poly. It was dyed using several different colors of Trans Tint alcohol base dyes. The pattern of the wood reminds me of ice, but the colors make me think of fire.

C&C are welcome.

Fascinating. Well laid out, skillfully executed and nice choice of colors. Not something I would have seen in the blank. Any idea what kind of wood it is?

That's another beauty Marc! You did good on capturing the curl in the photo! Bet it is like your other work in that the piece really plays with the light! Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!

Fire for sure. Looks like a lava flow. The coloring is really effective!

Mark,
What a perfect use of a wonderful piece of wood. I love seeing the natural edge of non-uniform shape like this one. The dyes are very nice and really bring out the changing of the grains. You also chose the perfect name ot maybe the perfect name chose your piece. Sweet job.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone, I am glad you enjoyed the piece. Doug, the wood is maple burl. I am not sure exactly what kind of maple as my friend had it for quite a while before giving it to me. It was dry enough to turn start to finish in one sitting. Steve, the light does some nice things with it. I will bring it to the next chapter meeting. David, I can see the lava in it too. Perhaps fire "on" ice would be a better description. I have a piece called "lava" to be posted later.

Very nice! I wouldn't have thought to dye it, but boy does that look good.

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone.

Doug, the piece was one of three I was able to get out of a maple burl. I do not know what kind of maple, as it was given to me by a friend and he had it drying for a couple years.

Steve, you are right, it does nice things in the light. I will bring it to the next club meeting.

Dave, I see more fire than ice in this too, perhaps it should be named fire "on" ice. I have another piece that I actually called "lava" which will be in another post.

Thanks again Happy Turning and Merry Christmas.
