For a long time, I wasn't sure if this tree was a Red Maple or a Sugar Maple. I had a leaf, but it was dried out and cracked and the edges had broken off. I finally decided it's probably a Sugar (hard) Maple. Some of the bark is in one of the photos if anyone knows for sure.

The LOML and I will be starting weight loss diet #642 right after Christmas, since the first 641 diets didn't work. This one involves eating nuts, among other things. I thought a nut cup might be in order, and it gave me an excuse for some shop time.

Sugar Maple (I think) with shellac and rattle can lacquers. 6-3/4 x 2-3/4 x 1/8". C&C appreciated.

Nice nut cup, Doug (bet you'd never thought you'd hear a compliment like that!). I like the little details around the rim. While I'm not normally big on color/dyed wood, this one works. Great job!

It's red maple now! Really cool bowl Doug...great form and the color really sets off the grain.

That is a nice bowl! Those nuts will be riding in style for sure! Beautiful form and the red is just a great compliment to your form.........I really like you left the inside natural........this is really nice!

Very nice Doug! Color has its place, and this one is very much in that place! Love the contrast, and the wife probably loves the color.

Nice form on this bowl. the wood has such a sweet, subtile curl that I almost regret that you painted the outside. But it does work well and draws the focus to the inside of the bowl. Nice!

Very nice Doug. What did you use for the color?

Very nice Doug. What did you use for the color?

It's Krylon red spray paint - lacquer based I think, topped with Deft clear spray lacquer. It still allows light/grain to come through and wipes off easily with lacquer thinner. I sealed it with shellac first, so the paint didn't get into the grain.

Very nice form especially the detail near the rim. The finish and color are very well done. I like it a lot!
